French mineralogist, an organic chemist, co- discoverer of Friedel Craft reaction. He worked on synthesis of minerals. He worked with American scientist, J.M. Craft in 1877 and discovered alkylation of hydrocarbons by heating an aromatic hydrocarbon with an alkyl halide and Lewis acid. This reaction finds application in petrochemical industry.
