A French chemist Yves Chauvin, was awarded Nobel Prize in 2005, in chemistry along with R.H. Grubbs and R.R. Shrock for their work in area of olefin metathesis. In organic molecules double bonds are stronger than single bond, hence it is difficult for chemist to break double bonds to prepare new compounds. In metathesis chemists break double bonds more easily by introducing a catalyst. This work has enabled the manufactures to make organic compounds including some plastic and medicines using fewer harmful and expensive chemicals.
