Kekule Friedrich, August ( 1829 - 1896 )

A German organic chemist, founder of structural organic chemistry, proposer of ring structure of benzenoid compounds. He proposed that the valency of carbon atom is four and carbon atoms could be linked together to form chains. Molecular formula of benzene was discovered as C6H6 . Linear chain of carbon atoms failed to give the structural formula of benzene. It was Kekule's idea of carbon atoms in a closed ring, which solved mystery. He claimed that the key idea of organic molecular structure came to him in a day dream, on the upper deck of London bus.
