Human Brain (Encephalon)

The human brain is well protected in the bony box called cranium of the skull. It is soft, whitish, large-sized and slightly flattened. The brain is about 1300-1400 gms in weight and 1300-1500 c.c. in volume. The brain develops to its full size at the age of six years and contains about 30,000 million neurons. It can be divided into different parts as follows:

1. Forebrain (Prosencephalon)  Olfactory lobes (Rhinoncephalon) Cerebrum (Telencephalon) Diencephalon (Thalamencephalon)

2. Midbrain (Mesencephalon)  Corpora quadrigemina Crura cerebri

3. Hindbrain (Rhombencephalon)  Cerebellum Pons varolii Medulla oblongata
